Theraputty: Help for Fine Motor Skill Development

Theraputty Pic for blog1 300x199 Theraputty: Help for Fine Motor Skill DevelopmentAlthough many children may have good fine motor skills and are able to manage everyday tasks such as writing, doing buttons and zips or playing with “fiddly” toys, they lack strength and endurance. For example, your child may have a beautiful pencil grip and really lovely handwriting but after writing one sentence their arm and hand gets sore or tired. They simply cannot sustain handwriting for any length of time.

This is where theraputty comes in. Theraputty is a silicone based putty that is graded in resistance. Manyof the activities done with theraputty are similar to those that one would do with playdough but because it is resisted, it builds and strengthens the muscles of the hand, wrist and forearm. It’s also a great fidget toy.

Which strength should I buy?

I generally recommend starting off with the yellow tub which is fairly soft. If your child has particularly weak hands or is younger than 5 the yellow putty is soft and a good place to start. [...]
